World At Your Feet author Rob Parker has been discussing the inspiration behind the book.
Rob says the arrival of his identical twin daughters shortly before the start of Euro 2016 was the spark for writing a football picture book.
Already accustomed to writing about the beautiful game for football websites Off The Post, Who Ate All The Pies and Soccerlens, he turned his attention to children’s books when he started reading to the new arrivals in his family.
Rob said: “My life changed pretty dramatically just before Euro 2016 kicked off. We welcomed identical twin daughters into the world. Although they had to spend some time in the neonatal unit, having been born at 33 weeks, they fought really hard and unexpectedly got themselves strong enough to come home before the start of the tournament.
“The result was a lot of time over the next couple of weeks spent watching international football, while nursing tiny babies, who took a surprisingly keen interest in the matches.
“They continued to show more interest in football matches that kids’ programmes over the first year of their lives. Of course, my wife and I also spent lots of time reading stories to them. Books by authors like Julia Donaldson, Andrea Beaty and Allan Ahlberg provided plenty of entertainment.
“At some point these two fledgling interests - football and picture books - became entwined and I got the idea for World At Your Feet.”
World At Your Feet is Bullfinch Books’ debut publication.
